In a proactive move, the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, convened a meeting with creative arts practitioners at the Police Headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, October 24, 2023. The purpose of the meeting was twofold: to enlighten the creative community about the workings of the police and to discuss strategies for ensuring optimal security services during entertainment activities, particularly during the festive season.
The session provided a platform for creative arts stakeholders and the media to voice their concerns regarding the police’s role. Dr. Dampare, in his address, underscored the significance of the meeting and expressed optimism about enhancing the operations of the police service. “We came to listen to you. We want you to talk to us, considering the fact that from this time till we usher in the new year, it is your period,” he stated. The IGP encouraged open dialogue on programs, activities, and concerns related to policing during this critical period.
Dr. Dampare acknowledged that, with concerted efforts, the measures implemented to improve the effectiveness of the police service would yield positive results. Issues raised during the meeting encompassed collaboration with creatives in content creation for Police TV, strengthening security at events, partnering with collective management organizations to enforce copyright laws, and addressing concerns of unnecessary profiling, especially towards entertainers with dreadlocks. This collaborative effort aims to position the police service as a benchmark institution not only in Ghana but also across Africa and beyond
